Online stores from R12 000, published rather than quoted on request. Payfast and Yoco checkouts, live stock that will not oversell, and courier rules that stop delivery quietly eating your margin. Every account opened in your name.

Before you spend anything

What an online store really costs to build and run

The build is the part everybody quotes on. It is not the part that catches people out. An ecommerce website in South Africa has a second cost that runs forever, and if nobody explains it to you before you start, your margin disappears somewhere between the checkout and the courier.

Every card payment costs you a percentage. Payfast and Yoco both sit around the low single digits per transaction, and that comes off every single sale for as long as the store exists. Delivery is the second one: if you charge a flat R99 and the courier charges you R180 to get a heavy item to Polokwane, you have just paid a customer to buy from you. Then there is hosting, the domain, and somebody's time to actually pack and send things.

We would rather you know all of that on the first call than discover it in month three. If the numbers do not work — if your margin is too thin to survive card fees and courier costs — we will say so, and you can spend the money on something else.

Choosing the platform

WooCommerce, Shopify, or built from scratch

There are three realistic online selling platforms for a South African business, and the honest answer is that the right one depends on your catalogue and who has to run the shop on a Tuesday afternoon — not on which one an agency prefers to build.

PlatformOngoing costSuitsThe catch
WooCommerce Hosting only, roughly R150–R600 a month Most South African small businesses. Full control, no per-sale platform cut. It is yours to maintain. Plugins need updating, and a neglected WooCommerce store gets hacked.
Shopify From about US$25 a month, plus fees Shops that want zero maintenance and a big app ecosystem. Shopify Payments does not operate in South Africa, so you must connect a local gateway like Payfast — and Shopify then adds its own third-party transaction fee on top, up to 2% depending on your plan.
Built from scratch Hosting only Unusual products, custom pricing rules, or integration with software you already run. More expensive up front, and only worth it when an off-the-shelf platform genuinely cannot do the job.

For most people who ask us about ecommerce web design, WooCommerce wins on cost over three years. We will still tell you to use Shopify if your situation calls for it — we do not earn more either way.

The parts that actually break

Payments, delivery and stock

01

Payments

Payfast, Yoco, Ozow or Peach — connected to a merchant account in your name so the money lands in your bank, not ours. EFT and instant-EFT options included, because plenty of South Africans still will not put a card into a website.

02

Delivery that does not lose money

Weight and zone based courier rules, or flat rate if your products are uniform. Set up so a heavy order to a far province is priced properly instead of being quietly subsidised by you.

03

Live stock

Stock counts down as orders come in and the product goes out of stock by itself. Overselling one item you do not have costs you a refund, an apology and usually a review.

04

Product pages that rank

Proper titles, descriptions, image alt text and Product schema, so your items can appear in Google Shopping and normal search results without you paying for every click.

05

Built for phones

Most South African shopping traffic is mobile. The checkout is tested on a real phone on a slow connection, because that is where carts get abandoned.

06

You can run it yourself

Never sold online before

How to open an online store, step by step

If you want to sell online in South Africa, the order below is the one that saves people money. Most of it has nothing to do with the website.

  1. Work out your real margin first Selling price minus cost, minus roughly 3% card fee, minus what the courier actually charges, minus packaging. If what is left is not worth the effort, stop here. This is the step most people skip.
  2. Register for a payment gateway Payfast and Yoco both need your business details and a bank account. It takes a few days and it is done in your name, not ours.
  3. Get your products ready Photographs, names, prices, weights and stock counts. This is the part that takes you the longest, and no developer can do it for you.
  4. We build and connect everything Store, checkout, courier rules, order emails and the Google setup. You see a working link early and can click through it while we build.
  5. Test with a real R2 order Before launch we push a genuine small payment through the whole chain to confirm the money arrives and the emails send. Never launch a store nobody has bought from.
  6. Launch, then market it A store with no traffic sells nothing. That is where SEO and digital marketing come in — and it is a separate decision with its own budget.

Where we work

Ecommerce web design for Johannesburg, Pretoria and the rest of SA

The studio is at 214 Theo Street, Wierdapark, Centurion, so Gauteng clients can sit down with us before committing to a build. Johannesburg is under an hour away and we do the first meeting in person whenever it helps.

Everything after that works remotely, which is how we build stores for businesses across South Africa. Nothing about ecommerce website development requires us to be in the same room as your stock.

Straight answers

Questions people actually ask

How much does an ecommerce website cost in South Africa?
Ours start at R12 000 for a store of up to twenty products and run to R38 000 for an unlimited catalogue with multiple gateways. Across the market you will see anything from about R8 000 to well over R100 000. Below roughly R8 000 you are usually buying a template with a cart bolted on and no delivery logic.
Does Shopify work in South Africa?
Yes, the platform works and plenty of South African stores run on it. The catch is that Shopify Payments is not available here, so you connect a local gateway such as Payfast or Yoco — and Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee on top of that gateway's own fee, up to 2% depending on your plan. Over a year on decent volume that adds up, which is why we usually recommend WooCommerce instead.
Which payment gateway should I use?
Payfast if you want the widest set of options including instant EFT, Yoco if you already take card payments in a shop and want one place to see everything. Both are registered in your name with the money going to your own bank account. We never sit between you and your money.
Can I add products myself afterwards?
Yes, and you should. Every build includes a walkthrough with whoever will manage the shop, plus written notes. A store you cannot update yourself becomes an invoice every time your prices change.
How long does it take to build?
Four to five weeks for a small catalogue, up to ten weeks for a large one. The build is rarely what delays a launch — getting product photographs, descriptions and weights together usually is.
Do you also do the SEO for the store?
The build includes the technical basics: clean URLs, product titles and descriptions, image alt text and Product schema. Ongoing ranking work is a separate monthly service starting at R4 500, and we will tell you honestly whether your store is ready for it yet.
What if I already have a store that is not working?
Send us the link. Quite often the problem is a broken checkout step, a delivery rule nobody set, or a site so slow on mobile that people leave. A fix is usually cheaper than a rebuild, and we will say which one you need.
