Before you spend anything

What SEO is, and what it cannot do

Search engine optimisation is the work of getting your website to appear when people search for what you sell, without paying for each click. It is three things: fixing what is broken on the site, publishing pages that answer what people actually search, and earning mentions from other websites.

That is the whole discipline. Anyone describing it as more mysterious than that is selling mystery.

What it will not do: it will not work in three weeks, it will not beat a competitor with fifteen years of content on a national keyword within a year, and it will not fix a business where the phone goes unanswered. SEO brings people who are already looking. It does not create demand that was never there.

The honest test. If nobody in South Africa searches for what you sell, SEO is the wrong spend and paid ads or direct outreach will do better. We check the search volume before quoting, and we have told people to keep their money.

Local SEO services

If you sell to people in a place — a suburb, a city, a service area — local SEO matters more than national rankings, and it is far cheaper to win. It is the difference between appearing in the map results when someone nearby searches, and being invisible to them.

01

Google Business Profile

Correct primary category, verified address, real photos, opening hours that match your website, and posts that keep the profile active. Most profiles we inherit have the wrong category, which alone keeps them out of the map.

02

Reviews

The single biggest factor in local rankings, and the one nobody can shortcut. We set up the request flow so asking becomes automatic rather than something you remember once a year.

03

Location pages and citations

A real page for each area you serve, with content that is actually different per area, plus consistent name, address and phone across the directories that matter in South Africa.

What actually happens

Your first three months

Month 01

Audit and foundations

Full technical audit, keyword research against your real competitors, Search Console and Analytics connected properly, Google Business Profile fixed. Mostly invisible work — this is the month where nothing appears to happen and everything gets set up.

Month 02

Content and fixes

The technical errors get cleared, the first new pages go live, internal linking is rebuilt. First movement usually shows in Search Console around here — impressions before clicks.

Month 03

Momentum

More content, links, and adjustments based on what the data now shows rather than what we guessed in month one. Rankings on the easier keywords start landing.

Anyone promising page one in thirty days is either lying or planning something that gets you penalised. On a low-competition local keyword, six to twelve weeks is realistic. On a competitive national one, six to twelve months.

Due diligence

How to tell an SEO company is lying to you

SEO is the easiest service in South Africa to sell badly, because the client usually cannot check the work. These five things are how you check.

  1. They guarantee a rankingNobody controls Google. A guarantee of position one on a named keyword is either a keyword nobody searches, or a promise they cannot keep. Ask what happens contractually when it is missed.
  2. The report is a wall of numbersImpressions and "keywords improved" are easy to make look good. The report should say what was done, what moved, and what is next, in language you can read without a glossary.
  3. They will not name the workAsk exactly what you get this month: which pages, how many, which technical fixes. Vagueness here almost always means very little is happening.
  4. You cannot see Search ConsoleIt is your website and your data. If the agency owns the Search Console and Analytics accounts and will not give you access, that is a hostage situation, not a service.
  5. A long contract up frontSEO takes months, so agencies argue for twelve-month lock-ins. The good ones do not need to. Ours is month to month — if the work is not landing, you should be able to leave.

Straight answers

Questions people actually ask

How much do SEO services cost in South Africa?
Ours are R4 500 a month for local, R8 500 for growth and R15 000 for competitive, plus a R3 500 once-off audit if you only want the plan. Across the South African market you will see anything from R2 000 to R40 000 a month. Below about R3 000 there is rarely enough time in the budget for real work.
How long before SEO works?
Six to twelve weeks on low-competition local keywords, six to twelve months on competitive national ones. Search Console usually shows impressions rising before you see clicks — that is the earliest honest signal that it is working.
Do I need a contract?
No. We work month to month. SEO does take months to compound, and leaving after four weeks wastes what you spent, but that should be your decision rather than something a contract forces.
What is the difference between local SEO and normal SEO?
Local SEO targets people searching in a place and is decided largely by your Google Business Profile, reviews and proximity. National SEO targets people searching anywhere and is decided by content and links. Most small businesses need local first — it is cheaper and converts better.
Can you guarantee first place on Google?
No, and neither can anyone else. Google does not sell or promise organic positions. What we can commit to is the work being done, reported honestly, and stopped if the data says it is not paying for itself.
Do you do SEO for websites you did not build?
Yes, that is most of the work. Send us the link and we will look at it before quoting. Occasionally the honest answer is that the site is built in a way that fights SEO and a rebuild costs less than working around it — we will tell you that rather than bill you monthly to fight it.
Do you work outside Gauteng?
Yes. SEO is done remotely, so location matters far less than it does for a website build. We have clients across South Africa. The office is in Wierdapark, Centurion if you want to meet in person.

Before you hire anyone

How to choose an SEO specialist in South Africa

Searching for the best SEO company in South Africa returns a page of companies all claiming to be exactly that. None of them are lying, because none of it means anything. Here is what actually separates one from another, including us.

Specialist, agency or consultant — what is the difference

An SEO specialist is one person doing the work themselves. Cheaper, faster to talk to, and the whole thing stops if they get sick or take on a bigger client. An SEO agency has a team, survives one person leaving, and costs more because it has to. A search engine optimisation consultant usually does not do the work at all — they audit, write the plan, and hand it to whoever you already employ. That last one is genuinely the right answer if you have a developer or marketer on staff already, and we will say so rather than sell you a monthly retainer you do not need.

We are a small agency, not a one-person shop and not a hundred-person internet marketing company. That matters because it sets what we can honestly take on. If your site needs work in three languages across four countries, we are the wrong people and we will tell you on the first call.

Four questions that separate a real SEO firm from a bad one

  1. Ask what they will do in month one, specifically A real answer names things: fix these page titles, rewrite this thin page, clean up this duplicate content. A bad answer says "optimise your website" and moves on.
  2. Ask to see a report from an existing client Names blanked out is fine. What you are checking is whether the report shows enquiries and rankings, or forty slides of impressions.
  3. Ask what happens if it does not work Anybody who cannot answer this has never had it not work, which means they have not done much SEO.
  4. Ask who owns the work when you leave The content, the Search Console access, the changes on your site — all of it should stay yours. Ours does.

Working with a Johannesburg or Pretoria business

Our office is in Centurion, which sits between the two. Johannesburg is under an hour, Pretoria about twenty minutes, so a first meeting in person is easy if you want one before you spend money. Plenty of SEO in JHB is sold entirely over email by people you never meet — that works fine, but if you would rather look someone in the eye first, you can.

Everything after that first meeting is remote anyway, which is why we also run SEO for clients across the rest of South Africa on the same published packages.
