WordPress runs more of the internet than any other platform. That is a reason to take it seriously, not a reason to assume it is right for you. This is the version an agency would tell you privately.
We build in WordPress. We also talk clients out of it about a third of the time. Below is what it actually is, what "WordPress website design" covers when someone quotes you for it, what it costs in South Africa, and the running commitment nobody mentions until after handover.
What WordPress actually is
WordPress is the software that runs your website and gives you a login where you can change things. Without it, updating a page means editing code. With it, you sign in, click a page, change the words, hit update.
Two things get confused constantly, and it matters when you are comparing quotes:
- WordPress.org — the free software, installed on hosting you control. This is what agencies mean by "a WordPress site". You own everything and can move host whenever you like.
- WordPress.com — a paid hosted service run by a company. Simpler, more limited, and you are renting.
Almost every professional build is WordPress.org. If a quote does not say which, ask.
WordPress or built from scratch?
The honest comparison, without either side being talked up:
| WordPress | Built from scratch | |
|---|---|---|
| You edit it yourself | Yes, easily | Only if someone builds you an admin |
| Build time | Faster | Slower |
| Speed on mobile data | Depends heavily on the build | Usually faster |
| Ongoing maintenance | Required, monthly | Minimal |
| Security exposure | Higher — it is a big target | Lower |
| Unusual functionality | Plugin, or awkward | Built exactly as needed |
| Finding another developer | Easy, thousands of them | Harder |
The deciding question is usually not technical. It is who updates this site in month seven. If that is you, WordPress. If it is us on a care plan and the site needs to be fast above all, scratch is often better.
Themes, page builders and custom design
"WordPress website design" covers three quite different amounts of work, priced very differently. This is where quotes stop being comparable.
A bought theme, lightly configured
A ready-made design with your logo, colours and text dropped in. Fast and cheap. The trade-off is that the same theme is sold to thousands of businesses, and layouts you cannot change without fighting it. Fine for a straightforward brochure site.
A page builder
Elementor, Divi, WPBakery and similar. A drag-and-drop editor giving you real layout control without code. This is the most common mid-range build. The catch is weight — page builders add a lot of code to every page, and on South African mobile data that shows. It can be built well; it usually isn't.
A custom theme
The design is drawn for your business and coded as a theme with nothing extra. Fastest, cleanest, most expensive, and you keep the WordPress admin. This is what "custom WordPress design" should mean, and often doesn't.
Ask this directly: "Is this a bought theme, a page builder, or a custom theme?" All three are legitimate. Paying custom prices for the first one is not. Any honest developer answers in one sentence.
WooCommerce: WordPress for selling
WooCommerce turns WordPress into a shop — products, variants, stock, checkout, orders. In South Africa it connects to Payfast, Yoco and the other local gateways, which is the practical reason it wins here over platforms built for American card processing.
It is a bigger job than a brochure site. Delivery zones and courier rules take real setup, stock has to sync properly or you will oversell, and someone must be trained to load products. If you are weighing up whether you need a store at all, we wrote a plain-English guide to selling online that assumes no prior knowledge.
What WordPress website design costs
| Build | Typical price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Theme, configured | R3 000–R8 000 | Off-the-shelf design, your content |
| Page builder site | R7 000–R18 000 | Custom layout, editable by you |
| Custom theme | R18 000–R45 000 | Designed for you, coded lean |
| WooCommerce store | R18 000–R45 000 | Products, gateway, courier rules |
| Care plan | R395–R1 650 pm | Updates, backups, security, fixes |
Our own numbers are on the rate card, and the wider market picture is in what a website really costs in South Africa.
The maintenance nobody warns you about
This is the part that surprises people, and it is the strongest argument against WordPress for some businesses. A WordPress site is not finished at launch — it is a piece of software that needs looking after:
- Core, theme and plugin updates, roughly monthly. Skip them and you eventually get hacked; apply them blindly and something occasionally breaks.
- Backups that are actually tested. An untested backup is a hope.
- Security. WordPress is the biggest target on the web precisely because it is the most used. Bots probe every WordPress site continuously.
- Plugin decay. Plugins get abandoned. Something you depend on stops being updated and has to be replaced.
Budget R395 to R1 650 a month, or genuinely commit to doing it yourself. The sites we get called to rescue are almost always ones where nobody did either for two years.
When we tell people not to use WordPress
We would rather lose the job than build the wrong thing:
- A one-page site that will never change. WordPress is overhead you do not need. Hand-coded is faster, safer and cheaper to keep.
- Nobody will maintain it. If there is no care plan and no in-house person, an unmaintained WordPress site becomes a liability within about eighteen months.
- The core function is an application, not content. Bookings with complex rules, dispatch, driver tracking, internal dashboards — bending WordPress into those costs more than building properly. That is what our apps work is for.
- Speed is the whole business case. If you live or die on load time, a lean custom build wins.
